Program Overview

 

The STARS initiative is designed to challenge Temple University student organization members. This challenge creates increased opportunities for professional and organizational development. In order to earn stars, your members will need to participate in activities that are designed to help you learn, grow, and achieve success. As your organization achieves additional stars, you will receive new rewards.

The goals of STARS are to:

• help your student organization achieve its goals

• develop your leadership knowledge and skills

• ensure that you are aware of university policies and resources

• promote responsibility, respect, and positive experiences through student organizations

• create learning opportunities outside the classroom information please contact:

What does this mean for my organization?

All registered student organizations will begin as one-star student organizations and will to reach higher levels within STARS by participating in workshops and meeting other requirements.

• Organization members and officers will need to participate in the mandatory training session (Student

Organization Conference) required for all organizations.

• Student organizations should learn about the STARS initiative, and set goals to participate in activities in order to earn more stars.

• Organizations and leaders will benefit as a result of active participation in the STARS initiative. This includes an increased awareness of important University policies, procedures, and resources. Opportunities to ask questions specific to an organization’s activities; access to programs and services that will support organizations; training in techniques to help student organizations run more effectively and successfully, and more!

• Student organizations will receive added rewards for hard work, including the opportunity to collaborate with other Temple University offices and departments.

 

How does it work?

• All tracking will be done via the Symplicity database. If you are unfamiliar with Symplicity, please attend or request a Symplicity workshop.

• The following page shows the STARS level as it corresponds with incentives, along with maintenance phase. Please review it carefully.

• Organizations will need to maintain their STAR level each year.

• To redeem incentives, orgs should email Student Activities and indicate which incentive they want to receive.

• If you have questions, you can always meet with the Program Coordinator for Student Organizations in Student Activities, or another member of Student Activities Staff.

 

Please Note:

In order to maintain a STAR rating, Student Organizations must adhere to:

• All Student Activities policies, including but not limited to: mandatory meeting attendance, re-registration, travel, high risk programs, The Village, and notification of changes to the organization.

• All Student Center Operations policies, including but not limited to space reservations, maintenance of reserved space, and notification of VIP-status individuals at events.

One Star Organizations

Requirements:

• Semesterly updates of officer information, meeting times and locations, and calendar in the Student Organization database

• Active Constitution uploaded in database

• Advisor information in database

• Attendance at the Student Organization conferences at the beginning of the fall semester

Incentives:

• Listing on Student Activities’ website

• Eligible to request meeting or event space on campus

• Eligible to request up to $500 in allocations

Maintenance:

• Semesterly updates of officer information, meeting times and locations, and calendar in the Student Organization database

• Active Constitution uploaded in database

• Advisor information in database

• Attendance at the Student Organization conferences at the beginning of the fall semester

Two Star Organizations

Requirements:

• All 1-star requirements, PLUS:

• 4 executive board members attend at least one workshop per semester.

• Organization plans at least one program or event per year (this can include a Free Food and Fun Friday)

Incentives:

• 20 free tickets to The Reel

• 5 hours of Free Play for 20 people in the Game Room

• Eligible to apply for the Student Organization Security Fee Fund

• Eligible to register for the Student Organization Fair in the Fall and Spring

• Eligible to apply for the full amount of allocations ($2500 per semester)

Maintenance

• Semesterly updates of officer information, meeting times and locations, and calendar in the Student Organization database

• Active Constitution uploaded in database

• Advisor information in database

• Attendance at the 3 required workshops at the beginning of the fall semester

• 4 executive board members attend at least one workshop per semester

• Organization plans at least one program or event per year (this can include a Free Food Fun Friday)

• All Allocations policies including, but not limited to deadlines, payments, and GAF guidelines.

• Violations of policies may result in loss of STARS status. Determinations will be made on a case by case basis.

Three Star Organizations

Requirements:

• All 1-star and 2-star requirements, PLUS:

• Attendance by 1 member at Inclusive Leadership Training

• Submit a Statement of Inclusion

• Organization collaborates with one other organization to host a program. Submission of collaboration forms is required in order to receive credit.

Incentives:

• Buy 1 day, get 2nd FREE at TempleFest

• Eligible to apply for space in The Village

• Eligible to receive Student Activities End of Year Awards

• Free room set up (not including linens, sound, lights or catering) for one event in the Student Center

• Eligible to apply for Kaleidoscope Fund

Maintenance:

• Semesterly updates of officer information, meeting times and locations, and calendar in the Student Organization database

• Active Constitution uploaded in database

• Advisor information in database

• Organization collaborates with one other organization to host a program. Submission of collaboration forms is required in order to receive credit.

Four Star Organizations

Requirements:

• All 1, 2, and 3 star requirements, plus:

• Organization attends an End of Year Reflection Workshop by April 15th

• Attendance at Transitional Leadership Training by outgoing president and 2 additional members

• Submit an organizational transition plan by April 1st

• 2 General members attend at least 1 workshop during the year

Incentives:

• Eligible to select your table location for Spring Fling

• Recognized and promoted at summer orientations by Student Activities

• 2 hour advanced registration for Student Center rooms

• Recognized each September in a Temple News advertisement

Maintenance:

• Semesterly updates of information in the Symplicity Student Org Database

• Organization plans and executes at least one other organization to host a program during the academic year. Submission of collaboration forms is required to receive credit

• Attend 4 different workshops each semester. No minimum number of organization members required

• Organizations executive board must meet with the Program Coordinator once during the academic year to discuss future goals of the organization

• Organizations must submit a detailed Leadership Transition Report

• Organizations must submit an End of the Year Reflection Report by April 30th

 

The Office of Leadership Development

Office of Leadership Development provides leadership education and training to equip young adults to be thoughtful and inspiring leaders both on and off campus. Leadership and the STARS challenge are natural partners, and students may choose to take advantage of opportunities in both areas to count for STARS and/or for Diamond Accreditation.

 

Its three main initiatives include Diamond Leaders, Student Leadership Challenge, and Academic Connections. Students can apply to be a part of the Diamond Leaders program upon earning 50 Leadership Diamond Points or more through participation in various Student Leadership Challenge programs.

New for 2011 2012:

Students are now offered the opportunity to attend designated STARS workshops and earn Leadership Diamond Points by doing so! Please see the ‘diamond’ symbol on the workshop calendar to find
